Tips to Prevent and Remove Rust Stains from Your Toilet Bowl

We have all heard the phrase "bathroom humor." However, there is nothing funny about a dirty bathroom. Rusted toilet bowls can be a major eyesore. Even if your bathroom is spotless and clean, rusty streaks are a nuisance for both household members as well guests.

What causes rust stains on toilets

Rusty stains that appear in the bathroom bowl can indicate a higher level of iron in its water supply. While it is unlikely to pose a health threat, iron particles in the water supply can oxidize and become a distinctive reddish-brown color. If your home is older, iron might be coming from old pipes which are deteriorating.

How to remove rust stains

If you aren't feeling particularly sick, it is not too difficult to get rid of rust stains in a bathroom. You will need to use the right cleaning products.

  • Use bleach sparingly as it can make rust stains worse.

  • Avoid using an abrasive scrubber. This could scratch the porcelain.

  • You can make your own cleaning solutions using either 1 part vinegar and 1 part water as a spray or 3 parts baking soda and 1 portion vinegar as a mixture.

  • To scrub the bowl, you can use a nonabrasive scouring or toilet brush.

  • You should always wear appropriate safety gear such as rubber gloves and goggles.

  • Turn off the water supply. Flush the toilet to eliminate most of the water from the bowl

  • For stubborn rust stains that are not easily removed, use commercial cleaning products like Borax (or Bar Keepers Friend).

Upgrading your plumbing

While it is important to keep your toilets rust-free, you can't get rid of the iron in your water. You might have to upgrade certain parts of the plumbing system to prevent stains.

  • Replacing rusty iron pipes with new copper, PEX piping

  • A water filtration system is installed to filter iron and other contaminants from the incoming drinking water.

  • Installing a water softer system to remove a variety of minerals

Winterizing your hose bibbs is important as temperatures plunge. Every spring, we receive many calls about bursts and broken pipes in basements or crawl spaces. When homeowners turn on the hoses for the first time, these pipes are often discovered. Unbeknownst to them, as they run their hose outside, water is sprayed into the basement.
